Honorable Mention
Irritatingly Literal
M

Peer through the streaky kitchen window,
past philodendron I can’t keep alive,
cactus I can’t kill, to ask why city lights
always shimmer as if they’re blinking,
glimmer as if they’re winking. Just once,
please give the gift of alchemy.

Your answer – heat waves, light waves,
dispersion, refraction, distortion –
is an unmown garden maze. Two people clever
enough to debate Doppler and Steinbeck, Dadaism
and Debussy, Taoists and Diogenes find love
isn’t up for discussion. Ardor isn’t city lights.

Passion is the airplane that pushes past
the glimmer-shimmer, roars over my head.
I don’t ask why it stays aloft; we’ve discussed
aerodynamics before. I need to know why
it’s going south. You recheck direction,
inform me that a bearing of 180°
is the proper flight plan.
